Dr. Brett Robertson (Ph. D., The University of Texas at Austin) is an assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at The University of South Carolina. He studies communication technology use in organizational, risk, and mass communication contexts. His research projects explore how individuals use social media and mobile devices in the workplace and disaster-related contexts. Much of his recent focus has been on disaster preparedness and prevention communication. He served as the lead researcher on a National Science Foundation grant (NSF# 1760453: The Changing Nature of "Calls" for Help with Hurricane Harvey: Comparing 9-1-1 and Social Media). His work has been published in journals, such as the Journal of Management Information Systems and Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, and he has received several top paper awards. His dissertation work about disaster preparedness in retirement communities received the 2021 International Communication Association (ICA) Redding Dissertation Award, the highest honor for a dissertation in the field of organizational communication.
